Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS)
This is the highest standard and resource intensive course of its kind! More instructors per student, more models, and more machine. The participants get intense one-on-one supervision of the scans on live models including patients with positive findings and real transvaginal scan experience. This is the Rolls-Royce of POCUS courses. Nothing else comes close!
Core emergency department applications include pericardial effusion, global cardiac contractility, abdominal aortic aneurysm, FAST (abdominal free fluid), pneumothorax, pleural effusion and 1st trimester pregnancy.
The Canadian Point of Care Ultrasound Society’s (POCUS) designation of Independent Practitioner is the most widely acknowledged certificate for point of care ultrasound emergency departments across Canada. It was designed to be of the highest standard of any such program.
CPoCUS IP certification is usually done 1:1 with an instructor in the emergency department. 220 determinant scans of patients, staff, and volunteers are obtained under direct supervision. This is followed by a written, visual, and practical set of exams. The IP process usually takes 25-30 hours to complete. It can be challenging to find a supervisor, enough subjects to scan, and enough time to do so many scans.
