Life Sciences Academy has partnered with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and Pharma Expert to provide a new innovative educational model that offers structured, comprehensive and competency based education for pharmacists in Kuwait. To assure the quality, global educational tools and best practice will be used, respecting national context. Based on tradition and access, enhanced by innovation, the future of pharmacists in Kuwait could be shaped with their input and engagement. Asthma course is a first clinical module in LSA SMART project.

The workshop will provide few valuable tools that can be used when managing change – SWOT analysis, Kotter’s Eight Steps, Roger’s Innovation Adoption Curve, Stakeholder engagement matrix, facilitators and barriers list. Participants will have the opportunity to work in small groups and apply each of these tools to a self-selected change scenario related to pharmacy. Participants will be encouraged to select real issues to maximize the take-home value of the workshop.

  • To enhance pharmaceutical care given to patients
  • To educate patients on the safe & rational use of medicines & devices
  • To decrease medication errors
  • Increase pharmacists’ competency in asthma & COPD management
  • Understand the importance of identification of drug related problems
  • Recognize the importance of self assessment & correct inhalation technique
  • Explain and apply the elements of pharmaceutical care for asthma and COPD patients

DAY 1: CPD Module

  • Key Elements of Innovative SMART Educational Model
  • Introduction to CPD Key Principles and Needs-Based Education
  • Pillars and Foundations of Educational Quality
  • Learning Styles - How to use them in successful teaching for pharmacists?

DAY 2: CPD Module

  • Introducing CPD Portfolio for Pharmacists: Long-term Relationship in Teaching and Learning
  • Introducing and selecting the list of competencies from the Kuwait Competency Framework
  • Quality Indicators for Patient Care
  • Change and Time Management in Pharmacy – Motivation and Sustainable Implementation

DAY 3: Asthma Module

  • Pharmacist’s role in the patient care in Asthma and COPD
  • Updates in Asthma & COPD pharmacotherapy and patient care (what is the priority in the therapy)
  • Case studies and practical approach
  • Practicum – Asthma Control Test, Peak-flow meter measurements, inhalation techniques, chambers and baby-haler usage, flutter usage, inhalations
  • Patient data – what do we need to collect and why? - examples
